Supply of organic raw materials are a critical factor in this industry. Since being established in the late 1980’s Kialla has built a solid network of suppliers with a database now numbering over 100 farmers. A major advantage Kialla Pure Foods can offer growers is the ability to buy all crops grown in a crop rotation cycle, as the mill requires a broad range of cereal and bean crops. In additional Aus Organic Feeds can also purchase out of spec grain or weather damaged grains in some cases.
Growers are spread from Central Queensland to northern Victoria. This spread of growers ensures, to the extent possible, that the impact of drought is minimised, hence not interfering with supply.
All growers are certified organic by one of the accredited certification bodies in Australia. Incoming grain is classified based on NACMA receival standards. Receival specifications are always a contentious point with suppliers – however previously Kialla has had products rejected by its customers due to contamination of incoming grain therefore stringent standards must be set to ensure grain is not contaminated. While the best endeavours are made to work with suppliers in relation to meeting specifications, ultimately there is always some negotiation required on out of spec product. Kialla has the added advantage of being able to take weather damaged grains for processing through its organic stockfeed mill as well.
Rob Wilson, the National Grain buyer for Kialla, is an organic farmer himself. Rob’s experience as a farmer proves to be priceless at times, providing advice and assistance on issues such as organic audits, grain specifications, storage and logistics, plant breeds and rates or just machinery solutions in day to day farming. Kialla holds several grower field days each year, with speakers on different topics, such as biodynamics or fertility management being invited along to provide some different perspectives. Growers are invited to register their interest by emailing
Rob Wilson or calling on 0427 634 467.
